In 2022, the Department of Computer Science at Paris Lodron University of Salzburg celebrated significant achievements. Two students stood out for their exceptional performance:
Matthias Pleschinger, at just 15 years old, was the youngest computer science student at the university and represented Austria at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Indonesia. Competing against 350 participants from 90 nations, he earned a bronze medal, a remarkable feat considering the difficulty of the tasks, which even challenge advanced computer science students. Pleschinger’s success was largely due to his involvement in the university’s GO4IT initiative, which offers young students advanced IT knowledge and opportunities.

Bachelor's Programme
What will I learn?
The BSc degree course in Informatics offers a profound scientific education with a strong practical approach in the fields of information technologies and its areas of application. Informatics deals with the complex artificial systems for applications in almost all areas of life. In order to control these systems, i.e., to create, maintain and develop them, students will learn the theoretical and practical basics required to do so. These are, e.g., concepts of programming, the functional principles of digital computers, operating systems, networks and databases. Each of these principles depends on the respective formal foundations.
Master's Programme
What will I learn?
In the MSc degree course in Informatics, students gain further competences in the field of informatics and its areas of application. On the basis of scientific findings, the obligatory modules impart state-of-the-art methods and techniques in important core areas. Students can choose to specialize in either formal subjects (e.g., higher mathematics, theoretical informatics) or subjects focused on practical experience (e.g., data bases, software techniques, software systems). Modules of application (e.g., geoinformatics, bioinformatics, information law, multimedia, image processing, data analysis, geometric computing) and optional modules allow students to specialize according to their individual interests.
Teaching Degree Programme
Scientific Career Training With an Emphasis on Practical Applications
The computer science and information management teaching degree has plenty of space for creativity and individuality. With a well rounded training in teaching computer science, educational studies, practical school teaching experience, and through the chosen secondary subject, this program is the base of an interesting and varied education for the future teacher. But it’s not just about gaining the technical knowledge. A further central theme is to instill social competence, which is very important in this career.
PhD Programme
What will I learn?
Graduates of the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Digital and Analytical Sciences have a profound knowledge of the current state of international research in the field of their dissertation and a good understanding of related fields of research. They are able to work independently with relevant scientific questions and to publish the results of their work in the various media of international science. They are qualified to develop new ideas and methods for research, the industry and further domains of applications, as well as to promote and guide the new generation of scientists. They serve as models of scientific and professional integrity. The instruction in original research and in the building of hypotheses in the face of complex questions, and in developing the ability to think independently in the face of established doctrines, is particularly important.
Study Supplement
Focus
Digitization is a global megatrend that is affecting the whole of society. It can therefore be assumed that fundamental transformations will take place in all areas of life in the near future. Despite the omnipresence of this development, the active design of digital transformation processes is often withheld from experts. Only technical knowledge and understanding enables the empowerment that makes people in digitized environments sovereign actors of change.
The study supplement “Computer Science Competence for All” gives interested students of all disciplines the tools they need to be able to actively participate in digitization. The focus is on the computer science fundamentals of digitization - from programming and building complex systems to solving abstract problems.
