Rethinking Digital Security: Interdisciplinary Kick-off by Prof. Dimitrios Simos
Last Thursday, 2 October 2025, Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Simos’ inaugural lecture in the Europasaal at Edmundsburg was attended with great interest. Numerous guests accepted the invitation from the DAS Faculty to give a fitting welcome to the holder of the dual professorship for cyber security at the University of Salzburg and the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences.
In his lecture, Prof. Simos covered a wide range of topics, from combinatorial mathematics to current security-critical application areas – from automotive software and cryptographic hardware to the protection of critical infrastructure. Of particular note is his interdisciplinary approach to transferring methods from cybersecurity to disaster management, thus paving the way for prevention and resilience research.
With vivid examples and a clear focus on the social relevance of his research, Simos demonstrated how mathematics can contribute to sustainably strengthening digital and physical security. The event concluded with lively discussions and an informal exchange at a reception – a successful start for the professorship and a promising stimulus for the academic profile of Salzburg .
