Public Lecture Series
How does smart toys’ surveillance affect our children? Does the digital euro turn us into transparent citizens? Can our privacy still be saved? Digital data traces concern us all. The public lecture series “Privacy in the Digital World” at the University of Salzburg presents current research on privacy and data protection in the digital realm.
What do professors of philosophy, computer science, constitutional and administrative law, and the data protection officer of the University of Salzburg have in common? They are the organizers of this public lecture series, which addresses the topic of privacy from an interdisciplinary and cross-faculty perspective. The question of individual privacy in our increasingly digital everyday lives—whether in studies, work, or private life—affects us all. There are two extreme viewpoints: some see privacy as being threatened by new technologies, while others view bureaucratic barriers as obstacles to innovation.
The lecture series “Privacy in the Digital World” explores this field of tension from various perspectives during the summer semester of 2025. Across a total of seven sessions, experts from different disciplines will present their current research. Leading researchers from the University of Salzburg and across the German-speaking region have been invited to contribute. They will illustrate the role privacy plays in their research and highlight the diverse range of expertise on the subject.
This lecture series is aimed at students as well as anyone interested in the topic. Each session focuses on a specific theme and can be attended independently. Attending all lectures will provide a comprehensive and academically grounded understanding of the many facets of privacy.
Start of the Lecture Series:
Wednesday, March 12, 2025 | 5:00–6:30 PM | Lecture Hall HS 230 | Kapitelgasse 4–6 | 5020 Salzburg
The introductory session will begin with a welcome address by the Rector. Afterwards, privacy and data protection experts from the University of Salzburg will provide brief interdisciplinary insights to introduce the theme of the series.
