Cybersecurity research from Salzburg in the focus of the daily newspaper Der Standard

Prof. Dr. Dimitris Simos, holder of the bridge professorship for cybersecurity at the University of Salzburg and the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, was profiled in a detailed interview in the current print edition of Der Standard (October 15, 2025). In the article, Prof. Simos discusses his research on securing critical digital infrastructures, the role of combinatorial testing methods, and the societal challenges in the context of blackout risks and networked systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the connection between abstract mathematics and concrete security-relevant applications. Prof. Simos’ professorship is part of the State of Salzburg’s Exdigit initiative and aims to more closely integrate research, teaching, and innovation in the field of cybersecurity.

Yvonne Holzer: Computer science student receives teampool scholarship

The University of Salzburg congratulates Yvonne Holzer, born in 2006, on receiving the teampool scholarship! Holzer was already interested in machine learning systems and robotics during her school days at HTBLuVa in Salzburg.

“My enthusiasm for technology and computer science was instilled in me from birth,” says Holzer. “Thanks to my mom, dad, and uncle - they all work in technical fields - I developed a talent for mathematics, technical understanding, and quick comprehension at an early age. These foundations continue to shape me today.”

Rethinking Digital Security: Interdisciplinary Kick-off by Prof. Dimitrios Simos

Last Thursday, 2 October 2025, Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Simos’ inaugural lecture in the Europasaal at Edmundsburg was attended with great interest. Numerous guests accepted the invitation from the DAS Faculty to give a fitting welcome to the holder of the dual professorship for cyber security at the University of Salzburg and the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences.

In his lecture, Prof. Simos covered a wide range of topics, from combinatorial mathematics to current security-critical application areas - from automotive software and cryptographic hardware to the protection of critical infrastructure. Of particular note is his interdisciplinary approach to transferring methods from cybersecurity to disaster management, thus paving the way for prevention and resilience research.

The State of Salzburg is funding four innovative AI projects with a total of €2.5 million

One of these is the project RAPID (Reliable AI for Public Law and Intelligent Decision-making), a cross-faculty collaboration between legal and digital sciences and, not least, another outcome of the EXDIGIT initiative funded by the State of Salzburg.

As part of the Science and Innovation Strategy (WISS) 2030, the State of Salzburg launched the call “AI Research Salzburg 2025,” setting targeted priorities in the field of digital transformation. The call was aimed at researchers from Salzburg universities and non-university research institutions who wish to carry out interdisciplinary projects at the interface between basic and applied research.

Internationally Renowned Computer Scientist and Mathematician Appointed to Cybersecurity Professorship

In July 2025, internationally renowned computer scientist and mathematician Dimitris Simos will assume the professorship for Cybersecurity at the University of Salzburg and the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences (FH Salzburg). This cross-institutional endowed professorship, initiated within the framework of the EXDIGIT project and anchored at both academic institutions, will offer a forward-looking focus in research and teaching.

Dimitris Simos has previously held prestigious research positions, including visiting scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the USA, senior researcher at the COMET Center SBA Research in Vienna, and Austria’s Science and Technology Representative at the United Nations for disaster and risk management. With over 150 publications, he is one of the leading voices in the field of secure systems.

Applications are already open - the application deadline is August 31, 2025. Three first-year students of the Bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science will each receive a scholarship of EUR 1,000 per month for the upcoming academic year from the company teampool personal service gmbh. The scholarship is awarded for up to three years, depending on academic performance. teampool, headquartered in Seekirchen, is one of Austria’s largest personnel service providers.
